Castle History

Over 1,000 Years of Power and Conflict. Long before the stone walls rose above the River Shannon, this site was a Viking settlement at the heart of early Limerick. In 1200, King John ordered the construction of the mighty fortress that still dominates the skyline today. Through centuries of siege, rebellion, and renewal, the castle has stood as a symbol of strength, strategy, and survival.
