Heritage Week at King John's Castle

'Shaped by Water' Limerick Storytelling Heritage Week 2025

Shaped by Water gathers Limerick water related stories for Heritage Week. It starts with a traditional Seanchathe Storytelling Performance with music in King John’s Castle, Lough Gur and Adare Heritage Centre to inspire people to tell their own stories about growing up beside the Shannon or Lough Gur or the River Maigue.

We are calling for Fisherman, Swimmers, Walkers, Birdwatchers, Boaters, Poachers, Riverbank Meditators, Flood Survivors, Turf Carriers and anyone with a story about the waterways of Limerick town and county to come and join in.

The stories will be recorded and added to the Irish Community Archive that collects folklore and stories from all over Ireland preserving our intangible heritage alongside the tangible.

The Storytelling sessions are free. There are additional activities for children, including drawing what you are hearing and learning how to interview your grandparents on their waterways memories.

The dates and venues are:

  • 16th and 20th August at King John’s Castle, Limerick City
  • 17th August at Lough Gur Visitor Centre, Lough Gur, Limerick County
  • 19th August at Adare Heritage Centre, Adare, Limerick County

All start at 3pm with a performance by a professional storyteller.

Come and join us to tell your stories and add them to the archive!

This is a Discover Limerick DAC coordinated event for all three of its heritage attractions of King John’s Castle, Lough Gur and Adare Heritage Centre
